# re: Wendy's - second only to Taco Bell @Wednesday, August 03, 2005 4:06 PM

Wendy's is superior to McDonald's or Burger King. However, there is something to be said about a whopper. You just never get quite the mayonaise jolt at Wendy's. Also, wendy's has the tragic failing of not offering milkshakes. Frosties are inferior.

# re: The first episode of Rome @Tuesday, August 30, 2005 8:29 AM

I enjoyed it as well. I am hoping that the main focus isn't violence. I was looking for more interpersonal relationships and that kind of thing. However, shows usually revolve around malevolance and gore so I doubt this will be any different. The opening scene, as pointed out, was a battle. Then there was enough violence to go through the rest of the show.

There is a whipping, some gratuitous crucifixion action, general Gaul slaying and a decapitation complete with mailing the head to the boss. I'm sure ancient Rome was plenty gruesome but that doesn't mean that every other scene needs to be about some violence. I Claudius managed to make a wonderful miniseries without the gore.

# re: Review of Sin City posted @Tuesday, September 13, 2005 8:27 AM

I think you should also mention all the cliches in the movie. The whore with a heart of gold, the grizzled hard as nails cop, the loving maniac, etc. They fill the movie with tropes. We are supposed to garner meaning from the standard "known entities".

Each cliche is simply a shortcut for story telling. We know that the whore with a heart of gold is supposed to mean goodness underneath the violence of society. However, it is merely a shortcut to story telling. We don't learn about these things but are merely told through narration that XX whore has a heart of gold. (aka goldie)

Why bother telling a story when you can use cliches and mood?

Why bother with dialog and characteration when you can smeer blood and guts across the screen.

I also give this movie 0 stars. If you want to see the cinematography (which is interesting to look at) just watch the trailer a few times and call it a day.

# re: Cooperation vs Competition @Monday, September 19, 2005 8:11 AM

What if in PvP tanks were able to taunt. Say a tank taunts another player successfully. That will mean that the "taunted" player will have a say -10% attack on other players in the tank's party but will still have 100% attack on the tank.

This gives benefit to a taunt in PvP, I think. The player can still choose to attack the mage, but with reduced effectiveness. If they want to be at full effectiveness then they have to attack the tank.

# re: Problems with Civilization IV @Thursday, November 03, 2005 2:37 PM

You should also add that there aren't enough Female characters. If I could choose I would have made one male and one female for each civ. But Mark can make me a mod so that I can be Liz for any civ.

Well, if I am totally making my own version of Civ I would cut out boats too. Man I hate boats.

Some further tweaking will be necessary with the compace florescent bulbs. FOr all that they give off similar light for less money it really isn't the same light. As with a flourescent bulb the light is very harsh and white.

I'm not sure if this can be fixed in the lightbulb itself or if it will pave the way for better lampshade technology.

# re: Review of The Island - 0 stars @Tuesday, February 07, 2006 8:27 AM

One thing that Mark fails to mention is that the movie must have been paid for by corporate endorsements.

The throw away shoe line was actually an excuse to cram the Puma logo into the camera. Evreyone drank Aquafina, used the MSN "telephone book", played Xbox, and drove a Caddy. Also prominantly dispayed were AmTrak and Mack Trucks.

When you start to count product endorsements and not really pay attention, you have to know that the plot is a bit thin and that the placements of those products is a bit blatent.
